Academic Assistance

There are many reasons why a student might fall behind or struggle academically. At LCS, we know and understand that God has created each of us as individuals with individual talents. We realize the diversity he’s built in to His creation – one person’s blessing might be another person’s curse. We know that some of our students will do extremely well in certain areas and struggle in others.

Lenawee Christian School offers a variety of programs to assist children needing additional academic assistance.  As a PLC school, we put a great deal of focus on Response To Intervention (RTI).  We have a 3 tiered approach ranging from services that are available to all students at no additional cost to premium services.  We recommend that current or prospective parents work with our faculty and administration in order to determine which program is best for their child.

Tier I:  Free services focused on additional time to study and additional access to faculty in challenging areas

Tier II:  Free services focused on developing study and test taking skills

Tier III:  Premium services with more intensive approaches to developing study and learning skills

Response To Intervention - -  Tier I

Differentiated Instruction (K-5th Grades)

We assess every student through adaptive testing (MAP).  This allows us to see where student excel and where they may have challenges.  Using this information, our elementary teachers create small group environments different modes of learning within the classrooms to give each student specialized attention to either progress further or to catch up to expectations.

Study Labs (6-12th Grades)

Study labs are built into the day for our 6th through 12th grade students.  Labs are set up by discipline (English, math, science, Bible, etc...) and staffed by our teachers and study coaches.  Students are assigned to a lab based on their area of need, but during the year students may request passes to go to the other labs as necessary.

LCS Learning Center

The purpose of the LCS Learning Center is to enable students with learning challenges (and have an Individual Education Plan or IEP) to become successful in the school environment. In the Learning Center, students are taught study skills while others may need help with reading of tests and/or quizzes.

Students who do not qualify for special education services (do not have an IEP) but desire help with test taking will be allowed to take their tests in the Learning Center providing they meet the following criteria: homework assignments are up to date; they are currently receiving special help from learning center staff, teachers, or a tutor; or there are special circumstances such as illness, death in the family, etc.

The Learning Center also provides many special services for students, including

  • Small group study test preparation ;
  • Should math tests not be finished in class, a student may come to the Learning Center to finish
  • Reading tests for students who struggle in one or more areas
  • Setting up after school tutoring (an additional charge will apply)

NILD Educational Therapy© (K-12)

NILD Educational Therapy® was developed to treat assumed, underlying causes of learning difficulties rather than simply treating the symptoms. It is a true therapy in that it aims the intervention just above the student's level of functioning and raises expectations for performance. Students are trained to view themselves as competent, confident learners. The goal of NILD Educational Therapy® is to help students develop tools of independent learning in the classroom and in life.

There are 2 models of NILD Educational Therapy offered. Students in NILD Educational Therapy® (ET 1) receive two 80-minute sessions of intensive educational therapy per week. ET 2 students receive two 45 minute sessions per week. These are individual sessions. These sessions include a variety of techniques designed to address students’ specific areas of difficulty and to improve their overall ability to think, reason and process information. Techniques emphasize basic skill areas such as reading, writing, spelling and math, applying reasoning skills within each area.

Students are taught by educational therapists, who are trained specifically in NILD methodology and receive on-going graduate level training leading to NILD certification. Regular collaboration between the educational therapist, parents and classroom teachers is encouraged in order to assess progress and appropriately adjust educational programs for each student.

Search & Teach (Kindergarten & 1st Grade Only)

Search & Teach© is a dynamic early intervention program in kindergarten and first grade developed to meet the educational needs of young learners before they experience the frustration of learning failure. This program has been used at LCS for over 10 years with great success. All kindergarten students are scanned using the SEARCH test in the fall. TEACH is a program of 55 tasks carefully designed to target the needs revealed by the SEARCH. TEACH is offered in a one-on-one setting, allowing the student to move through the tasks needed at the rate of their development. Students meet 3 times a week for 30 minutes.  SEARCH & TEACH is a very worthy investment for families to head off potential learning challenges early in your child's academic career.  Please see the Elective Services & Fees page for price information.

Rx for Reading©

Rx for Reading is designed for students ages 6-18 who struggle to read. Establishing the foundational skills necessary for reading is the focus of the program. It is a multi-sensory approach to discovering reading that is a fun and effective approach to building and strengthening reading skills. Weaknesses in the foundational reading skills are the only prerequisite. Preliminary testing is required to enroll.

The foundational skills of reading that are addressed in Rx for Reading are;
1. Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, to think about, and or manipulate sounds or phonemes in words.
2. Phonics is the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent.
3. Fluency is the ability to read a text quickly and accurately with proper expression.
4. Vocabulary is the area in which meaning is attached to words to communicate effectively and to understand what is being read.
5. Comprehension is the ability to understand what is being read. This is the ultimate goal of reading.

Students are seen individually or in small groups twice a week for 45 minutes. Please see the Elective Services & Fees page for the price of this program.
