Jerry Goniea grew up on a “Green Acres” kind of farm in Monroe, Michigan. After he attended a small rural public school for the first seven years of his schooling, his parents enrolled him at Stateline Christian School in Temperance, Michigan. That simple yet sacrificial decision set a new course for Jerry’s life. By his junior year in high school, he knew that God had called him to be a Christian school teacher. After a year at a small Christian college, he transferred to Pensacola Christian College from which he graduated with a degree in education in English and music. Pensacola is also where Jerry met his future wife, Becki.
They both taught at a the very small church school in Laingsburg, Michigan. Jerry served as the minister of music at the church, and taught high school English, history, and P.E. He especially enjoyed coaching soccer and basketball. Four years later, he took a job at Grace Christian School in Watervliet, Michigan, where he continued to teach high school English and coach basketball and soccer. He gained his first experience of leading student council at Grace Christian, as well as guiding the student worship team. With a growing family, both Jerry and Becki felt separate calls on the same day to transition to Adrian to Lenawee Christian where they would be nearer to both their families.
Jerry has been teaching at LCS since 2006. Each year during J-Term, he enjoys leading the LCS Missions Team. Mr. Goniea’s wife also works as the LCS librarian, and his five children, Isaac, Zachary, Joshua, Katerina, and Zoee, all attend LCS. They attend Grace Point Evangelical Free Church, where Jerry serves as an elder, teaches adult classes, and sings on the worship team. When he’s not teaching, he loves to play or watch any sport with a ball, play with his kids, and read or watch a good story.
